Filtration Efficiency in the Recycling Process of Particle-Reinforced Aluminum Alloys Using Different Filter Materials

Abstract In this study, filtration of aluminum alloy (Al) with different weight fractions SiC particles (SiCp) was investigated. Therefore, three filter materials 20 pores per inch (ppi) ceramic foam filters (CFF) were tested. A special three-chamber furan mold used for the casting trials to provide uniform filling and flow conditions process. Samples from sections gating system, as well filter, analyzed by optical light microscopy determine amount, size, distribution SiCp. scanning electron microscope (SEM) energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) obtaining element in composite. The efficiency increased decreasing fraction 5% SiCp reached a significant particle reduction over 90%. Investigations CFFs 10% have shown clogging effect metal interruption through ppi filter. An oxide layer detected around respective EDS. Moreover, strong accumulation observed, indicated steadily flattening curve density functions after each additional remelting cycle same composite material.
